Political Outsiders

Thayendanegea (Joseph Brant),
Mohawk leader who fought with the British
People formally outside colonial politics were still a part of the debate over relations with the imperial government and the new national government.  Slaves, Native Americans, and others who lacked suffrage sent petitions (such as the petition of slaves sent to the Massachusetts State Legislature, doc #36 in Voices of Freedom) advocating specific positions.  Others voted with their feet (by escaping, by fighting with the British or the Spanish) or through negotiated alliances (as with Native Americans who fought on both sides of the war).

For the purposes of this assignment, you may choose to be one of these individuals.  How do the growing tensions with Britain affect you?  This is a tricky position, especially in the run up to the revolution rather than in the aftermath, but if you feel up to the challenge, feel free to contact me with questions.
